A dental implant replaces the root of a missing tooth with a small titanium post, placed in the jawbone, which then supports a crown that looks and works like a natural tooth. Implants do not rely on neighbouring teeth for support, and with good care they can last for decades.
Who can have an implant?
Most adults who have lost one or more teeth can have implants. You need enough healthy bone in the jaw to hold the implant, and healthy gums. Smoking and uncontrolled diabetes increase the risk of an implant failing, so we discuss these openly at your consultation. If bone has shrunk after a tooth was lost, a bone graft can often rebuild it first.
The treatment, step by step
- Consultation and 3D scan. Dr. Omar examines your mouth and takes a cone-beam CT scan to measure the bone and plan the exact position of the implant.
- Placing the implant. Under local anaesthetic, the implant is placed in the jaw. Most single implants take under an hour.
- Healing. Over the next three to four months the bone grows around the implant and fixes it firmly in place. A temporary tooth can be worn in the meantime.
- The final crown. We take a scan and fit a porcelain crown matched to your other teeth.
Single teeth, bridges and full arches
One implant replaces one tooth. Where several teeth are missing, two implants can support a bridge of three or four teeth. For patients with no teeth in a jaw, four to six implants can hold a fixed full-arch bridge, which many people find far more comfortable than a removable denture.
Looking after your implant
Implants cannot decay, but the gum around them can become inflamed if plaque builds up. Brush twice a day, clean between teeth with floss or interdental brushes, and keep up regular hygienist visits. Our implant aftercare guide covers the first weeks in detail.
