What counts as a dental emergency?
- Severe toothache that painkillers do not control
- A knocked-out or badly broken tooth
- Swelling of the face or gums, especially with a fever
- Bleeding that does not stop after an extraction
- A lost crown or a broken denture that stops you eating
What to do before you arrive
If a permanent tooth has been knocked out, pick it up by the crown, not the root, rinse it briefly in milk and, if you can, put it back in its socket or keep it in milk. Come to the clinic straight away: a tooth replanted within an hour has the best chance of surviving.
For swelling, a cold compress on the outside of the face helps. Take regular painkillers as directed on the pack, and do not put aspirin directly on the gum.
When to go to hospital
If swelling is spreading to your eye or neck, or you have difficulty breathing or swallowing, go to the nearest hospital emergency department immediately.
