  • Dental Implant Aftercare: The First Weeks

How you look after your mouth in the weeks after implant surgery helps the implant fuse with the bone. Here is what to expect and what to do.

    The first 24 hours

Some bleeding is normal. Bite gently on a gauze pad for thirty minutes. Do not rinse, spit forcefully or drink through a straw on the first day, as this can disturb the blood clot. Rest, and keep your head raised when lying down.

    Swelling and discomfort

Swelling usually peaks on the second or third day. Hold a cold pack to your cheek for twenty minutes at a time. Take painkillers as your dentist advised; most patients need them for only a few days.

    Eating

Stick to soft, cool food for the first few days: yoghurt, soup that is not hot, scrambled eggs, pasta. Chew on the other side. Avoid hard, crunchy and very spicy food until the area has healed.

    Cleaning

From the second day, rinse gently with warm salt water after meals. Brush your other teeth as normal, and clean carefully around the implant site with a soft brush once your dentist says it is safe.

    Smoking

Smoking slows healing and is one of the main reasons implants fail. If you can, stop for at least two weeks after surgery, and ideally for good.

    When to call us

Call the clinic if bleeding is heavy, if swelling gets worse after the third day, or if you have a fever. Read more about dental implant treatment.

  • Invisalign vs Braces: Which Is Right for You?

Both clear aligners and fixed braces straighten teeth well. The right choice depends on your teeth, your lifestyle and how much you want your treatment to show.

    How they work

Fixed braces use brackets and a wire that your orthodontist adjusts every few weeks. Invisalign uses a series of removable clear aligners that you change every one to two weeks, each moving the teeth a small step.

    Appearance

Aligners are almost invisible. Ceramic braces are much less noticeable than metal ones but can still be seen up close.

    Comfort and daily life

Aligners come out for eating, so there are no food restrictions, and brushing is easy. Braces rule out hard and sticky foods, and cleaning around brackets takes longer. Both can feel tight for a day or two after each change.

    Discipline

This is the big difference. Aligners only work if they are worn about 22 hours a day. Braces work whether you remember them or not, which is why they are often the better choice for younger teenagers.

    Complex cases

Aligners can now treat most crowding and spacing problems. Some complex bite corrections and rotations are still more predictable with fixed braces.

    Cost

In Sharjah, Invisalign generally costs a little more than metal braces and about the same as ceramic braces. Our current fees are on the pricing page.

The best way to decide is a consultation with an orthodontist. Find out more about orthodontic treatment at Pearl Bay.

  • What to Do in a Dental Emergency

A knocked-out tooth or a sudden, severe toothache is frightening. Knowing what to do in the first hour can make the difference between saving a tooth and losing it.

    A knocked-out adult tooth

Find the tooth and hold it by the crown, never the root. If it is dirty, rinse it for a few seconds in milk. Try to push it gently back into the socket and bite on a clean cloth. If that is not possible, keep it in milk and get to a dentist within the hour.

    A broken tooth

Rinse your mouth with warm water and keep any pieces. A cold compress on the cheek reduces swelling. Even if it does not hurt, a broken tooth should be seen within a day or two, because the inner layers are exposed.

    Severe toothache

Rinse with warm salt water and use floss to remove anything trapped between teeth. Take painkillers as directed on the pack. Never put an aspirin against the gum; it burns the tissue.

    Swelling

Swelling of the face or gum can be a sign of an abscess, which needs treatment quickly. If swelling spreads towards the eye or neck, or you find it hard to swallow or breathe, go to a hospital emergency department straight away.

    A lost filling or crown

Keep the crown and avoid chewing on that side. A pharmacy temporary filling material can protect the tooth for a day or two until you can see a dentist.

  • Your Child’s First Dental Visit: A Parent’s Guide

A good first visit sets the tone for a lifetime of dental care. Here is when to book it, how to prepare your child and what will happen on the day.

    When to book

Book your child’s first visit when their first tooth appears, and no later than their first birthday. Early visits are about getting used to the clinic, not about treatment.

    How to prepare

    • Choose a time of day when your child is usually rested and fed
    • Read a picture book about visiting the dentist together
    • Avoid words like “hurt” or “injection”; keep it positive
    • Bring a favourite toy

    What happens during the visit

For a young child, the dentist usually looks at the teeth while your child sits on your lap. We count the teeth, check the gums and look for early signs of decay. For older children we may clean and polish the teeth and apply fluoride varnish.

    Questions to ask

It is a good time to ask about teething, thumb-sucking, dummies, brushing technique and how much toothpaste to use. For children under three, a smear of fluoride toothpaste the size of a grain of rice is enough.

    After the visit

Praise your child for being brave, whatever happened. Most children need a check-up every six months. You can learn more about our children’s dentistry service.

  • Teeth Whitening in Sharjah: Cost, Options and What to Expect

Teeth whitening is one of the most requested treatments at our clinic, and one of the most misunderstood. If you are thinking about teeth whitening in Sharjah, here is what the options are, what they cost and what results are realistic.

    Why teeth change colour

The outer enamel of a tooth is slightly translucent, and the dentine underneath is naturally yellowish. Over the years, coffee, tea, red sauces and smoking stain the enamel, and the enamel itself thins, so more of the yellow dentine shows through. Some medicines and old injuries also darken individual teeth.

    Your whitening options in Sharjah

    Whitening toothpaste

Whitening toothpastes remove some surface stain with mild abrasives, but they do not change the underlying colour of the tooth. They are useful for keeping a result, not for creating one.

    Pharmacy strips and kits

Over-the-counter strips contain low concentrations of peroxide. They can lighten teeth a little, but the strips do not fit every tooth, so results can be patchy, and gums can become sore.

    In-clinic whitening

In-clinic whitening uses a stronger gel applied by a dental professional, with the gums protected. It gives the biggest change in a single ninety-minute visit.

    Take-home trays from a dentist

Custom trays made from a scan of your teeth hold a professional gel evenly against every tooth. Results build over two weeks, and the trays can be reused for top-ups.

How much does teeth whitening cost in Sharjah?

Prices vary between clinics. At Pearl Bay, in-clinic whitening is AED 1,500 and take-home trays with gel are AED 1,100. Whitening is a cosmetic treatment, so most insurance policies do not cover it.

    How long does whitening last?

Results usually last one to three years, depending on your diet and whether you smoke. Occasional top-ups with your trays keep teeth bright.

    Is whitening safe?

Whitening supervised by a dentist is safe for enamel. Temporary sensitivity is the most common side effect. Whitening does not change the colour of crowns, veneers or fillings, which is why a check-up comes first.

If you would like to try whitening, call us on +971 6 555 0142 to book an assessment.

  • How Often Should You Visit the Dentist?

“Every six months” is the answer most people have heard, but the right interval depends on your own teeth and gums. Here is how dentists decide.

    The six-month rule

Six months is a sensible default for many adults. It is often enough to catch decay while it is small and gum inflammation before it becomes gum disease, and it matches how quickly tartar builds up for most people.

When you may need to come more often

    • You have gum disease, or have had it in the past
    • You smoke
    • You have diabetes
    • You have a lot of fillings or crowns
    • You are pregnant, when gums are more prone to bleeding

For these patients, a check-up and professional cleaning every three to four months is often better value than treating problems later.

When once a year may be enough

Adults with healthy gums, no recent decay and a good cleaning routine can often safely stretch to twelve months between check-ups. Your dentist will tell you if this applies to you.

    What happens at a check-up

Your dentist checks each tooth for decay and wear, measures the gum around your teeth, examines your tongue, cheeks and throat, and takes X-rays when needed. Then the hygienist removes tartar and stains. The whole visit takes thirty to sixty minutes.

    Children

Children should see a dentist from their first birthday. Most children need a check-up every six months while their teeth are developing.
